Korea announces team for qualifiers

South Korea has announced the team that will be representing the country in the last round of the World Cup qualifiers.

South Korea will be facing China on the first of September and then will face Syria on the 6th of September. Among the other members of the group, we have Iran, Uzbekistan, and Qatar.

South Korea has announced that five players that participated in the Olympics tournament will be in the squad. Among the most notable players, we have Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan who plays for FC Red Bull Salzburg as a striker.

NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA SET TO PLAY

There are reports that an unusual game between the North and South Korea is set to go on, despite the deeply rooted rivalry between both nations.

The state media in the North claim they had set up a steering committee for an inter-Korean workers’ football tournament to mark the 71st anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japan’s colonial occupation in August. There were reports that the game could happen but many dismissed it seeing the hatred between both countries until the media confirmation.

North Korea has new Manager as Jorn Anderson

North Korea have made a surprise move by appointing Jorn Anderson as their new manager of the national football team.

The country has been increasingly cut off from the rest of the world due to various issues. Amidst increasing nuclear tension in the region, North Korea would not have been seen as a destination for Norwegian Anderson. After having represented the Norway national team in 26 games during his playing career, Anderson has gone on to manage clubs like Austria Salzburg. He took an extended break from the game as a manager before taking over at Austria Salzburg in 2015.

Korea wins match against Lebanon

Korea beat Lebanon 1-0 in their last World Cup qualifying match. Korea has already qualified for the next round but was desperate to keep their 100% record in the qualifiers.

Korea was made to work hard during the game and winning the game proved to be more difficult than expected. With qualifying already won, Korea had trouble to up their game probably due to a lack of motivation and instead found it difficult to breach a side that was more than happy not to concede a goal.

Even though there have been several for managers in charge of South Korea over the last decade, the appointment ofStielike was always seen as a gamble. However, he has achieved reasonable success in the last 12 months andStielike is likely to go into the World Cup 2018 qualification with a lot of confidence. The biggest achievement for Korea during this period will be to have reached the final of the Asian cup.
