Korea could manage only one point from the three group matches and this came in the 1-1 draw with Russia. They had lost the matches against Algeria and Belgium. As a result, Korea finished bottom of the group with a load of questions being raised about the team and the manager. Hong Myung-bo started with an apology to the supporters, who had been hoping to at least see their team in the last 16 of the competition. He also accepted that his squad selection was not necessarily the best and that he would have done things differently with more maturity.
Korea will now start their search for a new manager before the start of the Asian cup that will take place in Australia. “When we left for the World Cup, I said we would give hope to people, but we ended up giving them disappointment. A lot has happened over the past year, and I’ve made my share of mistakes. I made decisions that I felt were the right ones at the time, but as the results show, I’ve had many failures. I’d like to apologize to fans for letting them down. After returning home, I carefully thought about my abilities as a coach and decided I still had many deficiencies,” said Myung-bo.
