KOREAN REVAMP

After more than three decades of its start, the Korean football could be set for a major revamp. Even though the league has had success over the years in the form of players – who have went on to represent teams from Germany, France, and England – the match fixing scandals and other problems have become a major issue.

South Korean teams have also been extremely successful when it comes to the Asian version of the Champions league. The teams combined have five titles to their name, while they have also been successful in the domestic competitions as well.

The match fixing scandal back in 2011 has shifted the focus on the other aspects of the game. More than 60 players and managers have been investigated as part of this match fixing scandal, which is the largest of its kind in South Korea. This has also been followed by the lack of interest to watch local matches.

Attendances have been falling for several clubs, and these problems are just the tip of the iceberg. The authorities have started taking notice of the problems, and a solution is expected soon if there is to be revival in the interest levels. In 2011, the league was reduced to just 12 teams from the 16. This was one of the first changes adopted on the basis of the Scottish Premier league.

“We didn’t advise — we simply pointed out the benefits of our system and discussed possible alternatives and their benefits and drawbacks. The key benefit of the split for the SPL is to accommodate an acceptable number of games for the 12-team league — that is the reason it was first used. The alternative would be 22 games which was not enough games but play four times and 44 games were too many, play three times and 33 games was unbalanced,” said SPL CEO, Doncaster.
